Hello everybody!
This article will describe my first impressions of Dune: Space Wars after 10 hours of play.
So, let's start with the background: it's hard to call me a gamer, and I don't understand new things at all. That's why I usually play old strategies from the 10s, where everything is so clear and so interesting - it's like I'm running away from this constant stream of hustle and bustle into a familiar and calm world, where, fortunately, nothing can surprise me.
But one day, after going to the movie Dune 2, I became very... no, not really, VERY interesting to get acquainted with this novelty. The genre of 4x strategies is new to me (I even learned the word 4x strategies to write this article), so my brain tried in every way to counteract this: "We don't want to understand something, our anxiety wants peace and wants a familiar game, kill Command and Conquer Zero Hour!” but after collecting all my thoughts and beer bottles… I launched.
The background of the world of Dune and its reflection in Dune.Space Wars
The history of the world of Dune is quite large and extensive. She's extremely fascinating, but that's not what we're here for, right? Just Google "History of Dune" and go read.
We are interested in the representation of the plot, therefore: the plot is displayed quite well, taking into account that it is not there in principle 🙂 The only good thing that can be highlighted is the type of units and the type of game for different Great Houses. Thus, under the Artrids, our gameplay is more "peaceful", while the opposite is the case with the Harkonnens - "kill everyone and everything you see, you can even put paprika in your own" - it is not for nothing that Harkonnen's main name is Vladimir.
Game design of endless Dunes and constant spice wars
So I really liked the design! It's super fun and you can immediately recognize Dune by it, which is super popular right now.
Sand, units, buildings, administrative elements - all this does not stand out from the general vibe of the game about a sand planet and spices.
How to play it? Did I like the first 4x Dune strategy in my life. Space Wars
Currently, there is training in the game - it is quite cool, because it does not take much time - 30 minutes and you are already aware of all the mechanics that are in the game! Therefore, I advise everyone to go through the training first, otherwise you will delete this game because it is stuffy - %"?%:.
But a short tour, the game has 4 main mechanics:
- Production of a base, capture of territories, battles. Well, what can I say, haven't played strategy for a long time? You make a base, buy soldiers, go to beat faces - everything.
- Spy pranks. Each faction once in a while has agents that can be used in the production of money, or in order to perform some action against your opponent
- Selling Spice - There are a lot of different resources in the game, but it's very stuffy and you don't need it in this article right now. But Spice is a central resource, needed to trade with the Empire and make a profit from trade. Since you are in the Empire (congratulations) you have to give the blood stolen Spice to your Emperor, and he always wants more and more, so be careful and don't forget about him, because he will send the Sardaukar special forces and you will no longer be on Arakis.
- Landsraad meetings are a sort of Verkhovna Rada. Here you have to vote on new laws and regulations. Among these are, for example, an increase in the price for economic units, or coercion for peace, etc. You each have 100 tickets, which you can distribute as you wish.
So, the game is cool. I liked the setting, fun mechanics. But to be honest, I didn't have enough battles - unfortunately. All units plus minus are the same at first glance, there are also no tactical actions, so the whole game is focused on building the economy and expanding the lands. That's why I give this game 8 worms out of 10 Sardaukars.
