And this is me again - a person who does not particularly play computer games, but in my childhood I adored several, and actually Generals is one of my favorites - I played through all the mods that were released: about the Second World War, about the war between Russia and America, Contra 007-009, which seems to still be in Alpha, although a lot of time has passed.
Gameplay Generals Command and Conquer Zero Hour - ordinary RTS?
That's right, generals is just an ordinary RTS, where you have only one resource - money, with which you can buy buildings or units; improve characteristics; build defenses, etc. And now fans of graphics, new ideas and gamers who are constantly bored are coming here. "Wow, simple RTS. How can you play this at all? Where are the graphics? Where are my 10213+ frames? Where is the 1213123+ mechanic? As Gen Z, I can't play one game for long, I want to shoot because my brain is used to Tik Tok" - I don't judge, but don't judge me either 🙂 I like simple and old games, because you don't have to understand them, like for example in this life
The main factions of C&C Zero Hour are GLA, USA, China
There are few factions in Generals Command and Conquer and the differences between them are quite superficial, here are the main differences, for example:
- USA – Quite a lot of aviation, not a lot of equipment. The prices for the units are higher, but the quality is also higher. As for the strongest weapon, it is a molecular space cannon, which, although it does a lot of damage, but in a rather small area, so subjectively the worst weapon
- China – Here everything is decided by quantity. Instead of one soldier, you get 2, the equipment is cheaper, there is only one plane, but quite a lot of equipment and the best defense among the factions are my favorites.
- The GLA is the rebels, as I understand it, the analogue of the Syrian fighters during the 10 years and the war in Syria and Iraq. So, they have extremely cheap and non-technological everything. There are no planes in principle, but there is an extremely large amount of equipment - from simple pickup trucks to large tanks.
The strategy of the game does not differ much from faction to faction - get resources quickly, use them for defense/improvement/economy/war and everything) The only difference was in the units, but it was quite small
Mods Generals Command and Conquer
Oh, how many mods there were for this game! And all because the company EA games never managed to make the next game, unfortunately. But that's not what we're here for, here's a list of the main mods and my comment:
- Generals: Project Raptor is a cool mod that adds a lot of units as well as its own large company
- Contra 007-009 - Reworked AI, enhanced aspects of the game - actually one of the best mods. Turns a "boring" RTS into an extremely advanced one. There is a big difference between the factions.
- Contra X is still the standard of all mods in my opinion. The best selection and balance. I love playing as a Chinese infantry general
- World war 2 - the setting is great, but the balance is very bad, unfortunately. Planes can completely bomb the entire base, since there are almost no units protecting the sky.
C&C Zero Hour recaps and game preview
Overall, this is one of my favorite strategies, it's perfect in many ways, but the obsolescence and outdated graphics make it uncompetitive, unfortunately. But we are waiting for news! Maybe someone wants to make a new Generals Zero Hour 2.
